The Two Aspects of Surrender Q: Is surrender aconscious choice?
A: There are two aspects of surrender. One aspect is unconscious and the other is conscious. Both are equally important and rarely understood. Both must occur in a deep and profound way within an individual for atrue and full Enlightenment to be able to arise out of what usually turns out to be only an experience. The unconscious aspect of surrender happens by itself. This event is involuntary spontaneous and in no way amatter of will. This is because the mind is not involved. The conscious aspect of surrender is the fully conscious recognition that the process or fact of surren¬ der has occurred or is occurring. The conscious choice to submit absolutely to that which has already taken place is the conscious aspect of surrender. Both aspects of surrender, unconscious and conscious, must occur equally and completely. If both aspects of surrender do not occur equally and completely the result cannot be full Liberation. The result will be astate of surrender that is still conditional. Only unconditional surrender, which is absolute, results in complete and final emancipation. 2 0 0
