Does Effort Have Any Relationship to Freedom?

p. 92

Does Effort Have Any Relationship to Freedom? Q: Does effort have any relationship to Freedom?

A: What is important is that you do the right thing, and if you have to make effort, it doesn't make any difference as long as you do the right thing. Some people have to make alot of effort, and some have to make almost no effort at all —it all depends on the nature of the individ¬ ual. If one gets attached to the idea of no-effort, that idea can become very fixed and no doubt, an obstacle. On the other hand, if one gets attached to the idea of having to make effort, then that idea can also become an obstacle. Neither of those are what I'm pointing to. Sometimes you have to put your foot on the gas, sometimes you have to put your foot on the brake, sometimes you don't have to do either. What I'm saying is, which direction is the car pointed in at any moment? Everybody's different. From one moment to another, different things are required. In the end there's absolutely nothing to do, nothing to change and no one to become. When you are no longer interested in the past and you are no longer inter¬ ested in the future, when you know you're completely helpless, these ideas of effortlessness versus effort won't have any meaning. 9 2 Is It Possible for Someone to Realize Enlightenment without Making Effort? Q: Is it possible for someone to realize Enlightenment without making effort?

A: As long as there is effort to be made then the ego can still have power. But when there is no effort to be made then the ego has no power any longer. That's the whole point. 9 3 Letting Go AState of Constant Amazement Just Stop Just Lean Back What Does It Really Mean to Let Go? Seeing Things as They Are Is Letting Go Let It End 9 5 AState of Constant Amazement Q: Iwork at getting out of the way and letting go, but in spile of that Ioften don't know what the right choices to make are. A; When you truly get out of the way you will find that you will do the right thing at precisely the right moment. Because of this you will be in astate of constant amaze¬ ment. Your whole life can be alife of constant amazement but only when you are no longer working at it. 9 6
