An Overwhelming Passion Q uestion What is it that will destroy ignorance completely? Answer Pure intention. The intention to utterly and perfectly liberate oneself in this life for the purest possible ­­rea­sons. You see, when our intention becomes pure, our desire for Liberation transcends self-interest. One no longer wants Liberation only for oneself. So what ultimately destroys ignorance? An unconditional relationship to the attainment of perfect Liberation in this life, supported by an unwillingness to compromise for that. Most seekers are satisfied with less than everything, with less than perfect death. The fact is, very few people in this world want to be nobody. Very few. Believe it or not, we can even be special in our realization. Competition between human beings takes place on all levels. It’s not so rare for a human being to have enough motivation to taste what’s possible, to have a spiritual experience. But it is rare when an individual has sufficient motivation to take them all the way. If you truly want to succeed in destroying ignorance, you have to be willing to let your heart become so big that it breaks wide open—so open that you are no longer in the picture. If there is any attachment to being special left in you, you won’t be able to do it. Life is not a drama that occurs merely for our personal pleasure or pain. There is something very big happening here that is unthinkably important, much bigger and far more important than personal loss or gain. When we experience for the first time what pure intention is all about, that is when we discover it. Discover what? Life as a whole. We find in this discovery that in the whole we do not exist as being separate, and it is this realization that carries within­ it the potential for perfect Liberation. The fulfillment of that potential lies in the knowledge that the whole is the only thing that is important. When this is experienced, one comes upon a kind of caring that could not have been previously imagined. A kind of caring that is so overwhelming that it is beyond one’s personal control. I’m describing a great passion, the purity of which completely destroys a merely personal relationship to life. If you want to destroy ignorance com­pletely, dying into this passion is the way.
