and so the question for me was at the beginning my teacher HW the great hwl punja was basically he was interested in people having an inner subjective experience of what we're calling the grounded being or in his particular tradition they called it the self with the capital S so what he wanted and he was very good at teaching this he was a very powerful teacher he wanted you to understand through your own direct experience he wanted you to have a glimpse of the absolute an experience of the nonre relative absolute nature of Timeless formless being and uh and in the way that he taught it his particular philosophical orientation of this tradition of of advit this radical advit of adant that he was teaching the idea is if you have an experience of the infinite of the infinite nature of what the Buddha call the uncreated and The Unborn I've been speaking a lot about that over the last six or seven days he said if you had an experience like as some of you are having experience your you're you're tasting or glimpsing this this deepest part of yourself that exists Before Time so when you have this kind of Awakening and people had very powerful Awakening experiences in his presence and under his guidance the idea is if you realize that the deepest part of yourself has never been born and never denter the stream of time it means that the deepest part of yourself is free in in the way I've been teaching than anything that's ever happened in time and through time and then if the experience is deep enough in the way I've been speaking about there's a shift of identity and now you realize who I really am is The Unborn and the uncreated right and I'm not so the the the historically the historical personality is not really who I am who I am is birthless and deathless birthless and deathless Immortal birthless and deathless Timeless and formless you follow Who I Really Am is birthless deathless timeless and formless and so if there's that realization there's a there's an experience of uh of absolute freedom that's the experience of being utterly released utter utter utterly released from being trapped in the mind from I mean I'm I'm giving I'm I'm giving the idealized version of it but from being trapped in the mind from being identified with your body and and and and deeper level even being identified with the world itself right so in in in the way that he taught you know which is based on the the his hisorical tradition of his own of his own culture the idea is is that that what's ultimately real is this deepest part of the self this deepest part of reality itself this Timeless formless infinite uh Mi mystery what he called the self that's what's real and it's real because it never changes it's it's birthless it's deathless it's Immortal it's unaffected Ed by anything that ever happened in time and in form and so the idea is if you realize that if you awaken to that and realize that it frees you from in the way I've been saying frees you from your mind frees you from identification with the body it frees you from uh being lost in the dream of the world the world is a dream it's not real the world in the way that he was teaching anyway the world is recognized to be a dream and ultimately unreal and so then if you are if you understand that if you experience that directly you experience freedom from your mind freedom from the body this is the idealized version of it freedom from the Mind freedom from the body freedom from the ego and freedom from the world it's Freedom complete freedom and total release from in the idealized version from and then the idea is if you get it if you really get it for those people who really got get you know got it very deeply you stop taking your mind seriously too seriously you stop taking other people's minds too seriously you stop taking the world around you and what's happening in the world seriously because you know it's not real you follow this is kind of what he was teaching very powerful very powerful so before we get to The evolutionary dimension of this so what what I and before I got to The evolutionary dimension of it of this which we're going to go into quite deeply um what I was very interested in at the beginning was the going Beyond ego aspect of it so I realized that in my Teacher's presence because he had an extremely powerful presence in his presence and through his teaching I could have and other people could have an experience of going beyond the ego you because they would experience a deeper part of themselves right as many of you are experiencing here you suddenly awaken to a you experience a deeper Part of Yourself than your psychological self another another deeper part of yourself that feels more real and seems to have no boundaries seems to have no boundaries comes to the surface of your experience and the fears and desires of the small self Fade Into the background right and so but this experience in with in his presence and with him was an inner experience it was an experience that the individual experienced inside their own subjective cons their own subjective experience of Consciousness and so in the same way this is what we've been going into over the last six six and a half days six days so far is we we've been looking into the nature of our own subjective experience when we stop identifying or make the effort to stop identifying with the mind and with with dualistic thinking so we stop make the effort to stop identifying with our mind and engaging with dualistic thinking we have a similar kind of experience where where the psychological self and the whole agenda of the psychological self and our compulsive identification with time and history falls into the background and what comes all what comes into the foreground is is is the mystery of being it's not something you understand with your mind but there's a sense of everything opening up and awak Awakening to that which is non-relative absolute and boundaryless right okay so so what I became very interested in you know around 25 years ago was um how does the experience of the transcending the fears and desires of the ego how does that experience translate into human behavior and so the met for there a metaphor I always use for this and some of you have heard me say this before and for some of you it's new the metaphor I used to explain exactly what I'm talking about is you can imagine that you're sitting in your bedroom by yourself on your bed and you're sitting with your eyes closed and your mind has gone completely quiet and your mind has gone so quiet that you've lost all touch of memory of anything so there your your your mind is gone there's no awareness of memory and you've gone so deeply that you can't even remember that you're sitting on your bed in your room and you're and you're and experiencing ecstatic the Ecstasy of of Timeless formless freedom without beginning and end you got that everybody got that so that's what's happening and then suddenly you startled awake and then you come back so you come back into your mind and you come back into the awareness of your body in your room and you hear this noise like that someone's pounding on your door so that's that's that's the state you find yourself in and then who you who you could whoever you want to be on the other side your mother your father your sister your brother your boyfriend your girlfriend your husband your wife your lover your boss your worst enemy it doesn't really matter to me but someone's on the other side of that door that really needs you to respond right there right then you understand so when you hear this knocking there's suddenly there's a problem there's a you find yourself in a difficult predicament and so the question is when you open your eyes like this and you go to the door who is it exactly that is going to be responding to who's ever on the other side of that door when you open it who is it in yourself there's someone there on the other side of the door that you have historic Rel historical relationship with and because this thing is going like this you have to respond the time is up they want you something happened and you need to you need to respond to them now you follow so the question for me was who's going to respond how do how do we ensure that when you open your mouth there is no Duality between where you were and who you are how you are as you are that's that was the big that's the big get get it this is really really really really really very important and I I I can tell you that most of the great Traditions haven't really dealt with this particular issue in any satisfying way
