the meditative state is a state of freedom because in a meditative state you're not holding on to anything you have no attachment whatsoever you have no attachment to life you have no attachment to death you have no attachment to anything i was speaking with the swamiji last night after this the puja and then then i was in his room and he was he in his way of teaching he uses the ganga as a big metaphor in his teaching and so then we're talking about throwing the ash into the fire and burning everything and we said he said i don't know why people don't just give it to the ganga that was his that's how he his in his teaching that's his metaphor why don't they just take their fears and their problems and their attachments why don't they just give it to the ganga that's how and that's how he teaches so it's the same thing it's the same thing as going to zero the zero means you're dropping everything right and everything by the way means everything it doesn't mean you you drop everything but a few things you drop everything it's the challenge now how enlightened a person is you know in one way is really depends on how profound is their ability to let go of everything not once but over and over again this is why it's important to understand it's not once i mean i ultimately ideally you'd say once but that's not realistic anyway so how enlightened a person is we we could determine by being how profound is their ability to let go of everything now remember the letting go here is not relative you understand what i'm saying if someone says will you let go of your jacket who said okay give you my jacket no problem no no i want your shirt your underwear your pants your socks your belt your money everything see what i'm saying so if you let go of your jacket it's not a big deal you have to let go of everything unless i want all the hair on your body you don't know what's next so the the concept here to remember though in relationship to what we're speaking about here is that letting go is not of anything particular is everybody following me everybody paying attention that in an enlightenment context in an enlightened context is evolutionary enlightenment so in an enlightenment context the letting go is not of this or that someone says i'm very attached to my car i'm very attached to my wife i'm very attached to this that or the other thing and i'm having trouble letting go of something particular so in an enlightenment context the letting go is not of anything particular it's letting go of everything so the the enlight the freedom of enlightenment itself only comes from letting go of everything not not letting not letting go of anything particular and that's the very important distinction here so the letting go has to be of everything and not anything in particular so for example if you're sitting quietly like this unless at that moment you're letting go of everything you're wasting your time there's no meditation meditation equals letting go of everything right not letting go of this thing or that thing it's everything that's what meditation is if if you see if you equate as i do if you equate meditation with freedom if you're going to make if you're going to equate meditation equals freedom spiritual freedom soul freedom if meditation equals soul freedom or spiritual freedom then then soul freedom and soul freedom of your own soul and spiritual freedom only comes from letting go of everything not this thing or that thing a lot of people say if i could only let go of my attachment to my wife my husband my children my car my house my girlfriend whatever it is i would be i would be free say no you wouldn't if you're going to be free in a context of enlightenment you have to be willing to let go of everything so that's what meditation is and that's when it's real meditation only becomes real and powerful and authentic and liberating if meditation equals letting go of everything if meditation doesn't equal letting go of everything and then you then you're just doing some kind of uh psychotherapeutic relaxation exercise like if you read all the new age magazines it's it's all about relaxation exercises right for stressful people people are very stressful so they need to relax inhale oh you know whatever it is and you so you take you can have a spiritual relaxation technique and it'll make you feel much better but it doesn't won't it won't equal freedom see so feeling better feeling better and being free don't necessarily mean the same thing you understand there's a distinction between feeling better is one thing being free is another everybody understand the difference feeling better is relative being free is not relative see the point something says i feel so much better you say well that's very good but that doesn't mean anything it's better so you feel better and then you don't and you feel good and you feel bad you feel better and you feel worse but it's all relative but when we talk about spiritual freedom or soul freedom then we're speaking about something which isn't relative you understand so enlightenment the freedom of enlightenment only comes from letting go of everything so when we say going from minus one to zero minus one to zero you're getting you that means you're being that's from a life of attachment a life of fear and attachment to letting go of everything so in theory it means you have no attachments you
